ARMORY ARTS WEEK NEW YORK CITY
March 4, 2014 – March 9, 2014
MISSION OF ARMORY ARTS WEEK
In its sixteen years, The Armory Show, America’s leading fine art fair devoted to the most important art of the 20th and 21st centuries, has become an international institution, bringing artists, galleries, collectors, critics and curators from all over the world to New York every March. Armory Arts Week strives to take advantage of this yearly convergence of the world’s top collectors and art enthusiasts by proudly consolidating and promoting a diverse selection of our city’s own cultural offerings.
In celebration of New York’s unparalleled artistic communities, Armory Arts Week works to highlight the distinct art scenes of our city’s multiple neighborhoods and boroughs. Throughout the week of The Armory Show, we promote a different neighborhood each day with cultural events for all levels of visitors. Past events have included special receptions, open studios, art tours, performances, panels, and artist discussions.
This concept of a week of arts-related events was born out of the festivities and widely-felt excitement generated by The Armory Show, and was formalized with the support of the city in 2009. Since then, Armory Arts Week has continued to expand its reach throughout all five boroughs of New York. From elaborate benefit parties to interactive public programming, The Armory Show hopes that Armory Arts Week will continue to enrich the public through the promotion of New York’s exceptional arts-related events.
ARMORY ARTS WEEK AUDIENCE
Armory Arts Week attracts not only residents of New York City and the Tri-State area but visitors from all over the world. According to a 2007 independent economic impact study, of the 52,000 visitors to The Armory Show, 56 percent (29,000) were visitors to New York City; out-of- town visitors were comprised of 11,000 from other countries, 5,000 living in the suburbs of NYC, and 13,000 from elsewhere in the United States; among all out-of-town visitors, 73 percent cited The Armory Show as their primary reason for being in New York City. With this year’s Focus on China, the number of foreign attendees promises to exceed that of previous years.

ARMORY FOCUS:CHINA
Armory Focus: China, curated by Philip Tinari, Director of The Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, aims to illuminate the strength, dynamism, seriousness and originality of the Chinese art scene and system today. Tinari notes that “Xu Zhen’s participation will further activate many crucial questions meant to be raised by Armory Focus: China.Throughout his career, Xu Zhen has been at the forefront of critical thinking about the role of art and artists in contemporary China, engaging smartly and humorously with many of the big issues facing cultural production there today. It is also particularly thrilling that this year’s Armory Focus: China coincides with Xu Zhen’s major mid-career survey exhibition at UCCA."
Noah Horowitz, Executive Director of The Armory Show notes, “Over the past decade, Xu Zhen has firmly established himself as one of the most insightful provocateurs of a younger generation of Chinese contemporary artists. We are thrilled to collaborate with him as the 2014 Commissioned Artist and through this initiative look forward to extending our fair’s legacy as a site for international dialogue and critical debate."
Xu Zhen has achieved international acclaim through exhibitions at venues such as the Venice Biennale, The Museum of Modern Art, the Mori Art Museum, MoMA PS1, Performa and the Tate Liverpool. As the commissioned artist, Xu Zhen will help create the visual identity of 2014 fair and create two limited edition artworks with proceeds benefiting the Museum of Modern Art and the Pat Hearn & Colin de Land Cancer Foundation.
